The most effective way to learn new vocabulary is through reading. The more you read, the more words you will get exposed to. People with low vocabulary levels usually don’t enjoy reading because they don’t understand many words and end up getting bored.
If this is the case then go for the topics which interest you. Your interest and your vocabulary level will derive the meaning of some words which you don’t know. You will get to learn new words and your word power will gradually increase.
2.Use Dictionary and thesaurus:
It is the most indispensable source to improve your vocabulary. You can use a dictionary or can even access online. You can get the meaning,its pronunciation, synonyms, antonyms and much more information about that particular word. While reading you come across lots of new words and having a handy dictionary will help you out in deriving its meaning and it’s usage in a sentence too.
3.Engage in conversations:
Having conversations with others will help a great deal in improving your effective vocabulary as well as your fluency in speaking. You can use the words which you have learned in your reading practice and in return you get to hear some new words too. Conversation helps in adding others word power with yours.
Learning is always fun. It is more interesting when you play some games or do some group activities. Playing games like Crosswords, scrabble, boggle, anagrams can help you in learning and using new words. Some really good word games are available on the internet which you can play alone or with your friends. You can play those games anytime when you are bored, or before going to bed or even during emptying your bowels.
5.Create a personal dictionary:
Note down the new words which you have learned so that you can revise those words again in future. It is usual that you may not be able to recall the exact meaning of the word you have learned recently, so keeping those in your list will help you to remember that word better and more effectively. It will also act as a positive force which will make you learn more new words and you can see how many words you have already learned.
